What is the Course about?
Electronic Engineering develops the way electricity is used to control equipment. Electronic engineers continually improve the quality of our lives through the development of new equipment in the fields of medicine, communications, computing, security, business and entertainment. It is a challenging and creative profession and one which has brought us MP3 players, digital cameras, security systems, improved weather forecasting, electronic medical devices and so many other things we now take for granted.
This three-year programme combines theory and practical skills with 50% of class time spent on practical exercises in laboratories, workshops and the computing centre. Modules over the programme's three years include: Electricity, Electronics, Engineering Science, Electronic Engineering Practice, Technical Communication, System Design and Test, Analogue and Digital Electronic Systems, System Design and Fabrication and Programmable Electronics amongst others. Students are set an extensive development project in Year 3 that requires use of acquired practical skills.
- Accredited by Engineers Ireland (EI) and graduates are eligible for EI membership.
- 50% of class time dedicated to practical exercises in laboratories, workshops and computing centre.
- Well balanced mixture of theory and practical elements with an extensive design project in Year 3.
- Latest computer aided design software tools and simulation laboratories.
- Exit Award: Higher Certificate in Engineering - Electronic Engineering (NFQ Level 6) after Year 2.
What follow-on study opportunities are available?
Graduates of this programme will be eligible to progress to Year 4 of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electronic Systems (CW558) at IT Carlow.
Professional Bodies Accreditation
This programme is accredited by Engineers Ireland (EI) as meeting the educational requirements of Associate Engineer membership.

Electronic Engineering offers a broad range of exciting career challenges including the creation of new innovations and developments in telecommunications, robotics, computing hardware and power and electrical equipment. Graduates of the programme can expect to find careers as:
- Development engineers - the design and development of new electronic engineering products
- Technical support managers - installing, commissioning and servicing electronic products
- Communications engineers - operating, upgrading and optimising communication networks.
What are the minimum entry requirements?
- 5 subjects at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.
- English or Irish at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.
- Mathematics at Ordinary Level Grade O6 or Higher Level Grade H7 or better.
Mature applicants will be assessed on an individual basis and may be interviewed.
