The library provides access to a wide range of online databases which give comprehensive coverage of the subjects taught at IT Carlow. The majority of these databases can be searched via the EDS Web Discovery Service as well as through their individual search interfaces. Most of the databases are available for on- or off-campus access. Where off-campus access is not available this is shown in the list below.

It features almost 9,000 full-text journals, and offers unmatched coverage of information spanning a broad range of non-business areas of academic study including: biology, chemistry, civil engineering, engineering, ethnic & multicultural studies, geology, law, materials science, mathematics, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, psychology, women's studies and many other fields. APA e-Books - APA Books E-Collections encompass book content in psychology and related disciplines, including sociology, education, industrial and organisational psychology, medicine, psychiatry, nursing pharmacology, neuroscience, and physiology etc. Coverage within each collection is limited to scholarly and professional titles. Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria - Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria (BMSAB) is a reference work aimed at undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, professors and experienced professionals at all levels. About a hundred new genera and 600+ new species have been described per year for each of the last 5 years. To remain abreast of this explosion in knowledge of the microbial world, an electronic manual with frequent updates is necessary. The BMSAB is an essential tool for anyone at the forefront of research in microbiology. Bergey's is the most complete and authoritative description of bacterial and archaeal diversity. Business Source Complete - Business Source Complete replaces Business Source Premier in our subscription from 2012 onwards. It contains more active, peer-reviewed, business-related journals than any other database currently available. Additional full-text non-journal content includes financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses, faculty seminars (video) and more. Construction Information Service Online - A comprehensive source of technical information and standards relating to the construction industry. As well as the Core service, supplements for Building, Civil & Structural Engineering, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering and Construction Management are included. Material relevant to Ireland is also included.
Construction Web Site - Contains lots of information on building construction, past and present. It's aimed at students and practitioners and anyone else who is interested in building construction and building history. It concentrates on principles and practice; not on the details of Building Regulations or British Standards. Information has been gleaned from a variety of sources including manufacturers, specialist contractors, surveyors, building control officers, trade bodies, early text books and trade catalogues, county & city record offices, museums and so on ... The Construction Web Site includes: hundreds of pages of text on all aspects of domestic building construction; nearly two thousand photos showing new and old construction practice; hundreds of 2D and 3D graphics; several PowerPoint presentations; lots of short video clips and several multiple choice tests; a brief and fairly non-technical summary of the most important Building Regulations (housing only). EBook Central Academic Complete - Is a growing e-book collection spanning all academic subject areas. Currently providing over 85,000 titles including subjects such as Business & Economics, Computers & IT, Education, Fine Arts, Language & Literature, Law, Life Sciences, Medicine, Physical Sciences, Psychology, Social Sciences, Technology.
Education in Video - Education in Video is the first online collection of streaming video developed specifically for training and developing teachers. Upon completion, the collection will contain more than 3,000 video titles totaling 1,300 hours of teaching demonstrations, lectures, documentaries, and primary-source footage of students and teachers in actual classrooms. It will give education faculty, students, and in-service teachers a single source for the best research-based professional development video resources available. Emerald Journals - Full text access to 175 journals. Subjects include Business, Engineering, Marketing, Management, Quality, Human Resources, Education & Training etc. The coverage of 125 Emerald journals within the IT Carlow subscription has been expanded to include all backfiles. Emerald Social Sciences eBooks - Emerald Social Sciences eBook Series Collection complements and extends the current Emerald resource, adding more than 210 volumes from over 35 book series titles. The collection provides contemporary and high quality research, and contributes much to debate in the fields of politics, psychology, sociology, health care and education. GreenFILE - GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 records. Click here for on-campus access.
ICE e-Books - Staff from the Faculty of Engineering have chosen a selection of e-Books from the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK). There are 112+ titles in this collection. Full text access is limited to these e-Books plus any free open access material. It is also possible to explore ICE archives back to 1836, browse ICE Publishing's internationally renowned journals and access over 1400 eBooks. IEEE / IET Electronic Library (IEL) - The IEEE / IET Electronic Library is a powerful resource for discovery and access to scientific and technical content published by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and its publishing partners. It provides access to almost 3-million full-text documents from some of the world's most highly cited publications in electrical engineering, computer science and electronics. The content includes 151 journals, over 900 conference proceedings, and more than 3,400 technical standards. Approximately 25,000 new documents are added to IEEE Xplore each month. Industrial Relations News - Industrial Relations News (IRN) is a weekly Irish publication providing comprehensive coverage of all industrial and employee relations issues. Contents include: News, analysis and features on all current industrial/employee developments, Local and national pay bargaining, Labour law developments, Employment Appeals Tribunal and Equality Officer cases, Impact of EU Directives on industrial relations and employment law and Coverage of Labour Court and Labour Relations Commission (LRC) cases. INFOTRAC General OneFile - A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles, many with images. Updated daily. Most articles can also be downloaded as MP3 files. Click here for on-campus access.
Ingentaconnect - Ingentaconnect offers searchable access to over 4.5 million articles from 13,500+ electronic publications. IT Carlow patrons can search this resource. However, full text access is only available for around 21 subscribed titles which include Design and Culture, The Design Journal, Educational Research, Enterprise Development & Microfinance, International Journal of Logistics, Journal of Sports Sciences, Nematology. Ireland Collection - The Ireland Collection, developed in cooperation with Queen's University Belfast, is an interdisciplinary collection of journals and other materials. It contains over 75 journals, 200 monographs and 2,500 manuscript pages. There is a strong emphasis on Irish history and archaeology, but also covers art, folklore, literature, mathematics, and biology. Materials span from the 1780s to the present. The Ireland Collection was created with funding from the JISC Digitisation Programme and is being made freely available to publicly-funded institutions in Ireland. isurv - isurv is designed to specifically meet the information needs of surveyors, the surveying profession and the surveying industry. It is a one-stop-shop for best practice and the easiest way to access RICS official guidance online. It contains extensive expert practical commentary, legislative guidance, thousands of relevant case summaries and hundreds of ready to use standard letters and forms. Regularly updated, the information is the most current that is available from the RICS and contains the latest editions of all relevant RICS guidance notes. Click here for on-campus access. Journals @ Ovid - A service from Ovid which provides an aggregate of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals from over 50 publishers and societies. While all titles are searchable, full-text access is restricted to those Sports Medicine titles for which IT Carlow holds a subscription: American Journal of Sports Medicine, Exercise & Sports Science Reviews, Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, Strength and Conditioning Journal. JSTOR - JSTOR is an archive of academic journal back issues. Journals are always included from volume 1, issue 1 and include previous and related titles. However, the most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are not available, but users can search this recent material and link to the full text (depending on subscription status). IT Carlow subscribes to Arts & Sciences IV module which has a strong focus on the professions of business, education, and law, and also includes titles in psychology and public policy and administration. IT Carlow also subscribes to Arts & Sciences VIII module which has a strong focus on art & art history, classical studies, philosophy, language & literature, and music. Justis - Justis provides access to The Irish Reports and Irish Digests, published by The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for Ireland. This gives coverage of over 170 years of Irish case reports and contains the full text data of published cases from 1838 to the present day. The data is updated every 3 months. The Irish Reports is the most comprehensive series of case reports covering decisions of major importance of the superior courts of Ireland. The reports are compiled by practising barristers and are cited authoritatively in Irish courts and tribunals. Each report includes a headnote which summarises the judgements. Irish Digests provides a summary for each case reported in: The Irish Reports (1917 - 1999), Irish Jurist Reports (1932 - 1965), Irish Law Journal (1931 - 1934) Irish Law Reports Monthly (1976 2000), Irish Law Times Reports (53 - 114), Northern Ireland Reports (1925 - 1999) Irish Special Reports (1980 - 1998). LexisNexis Company Dossier - Company Dossier enables you to gain insights into prospects, customers and competitors with instant access to up-to-date, trusted and comprehensive information on 3 million UK companies and 46 million companies worldwide. Dossier collates information from authoritative business, news, country, market research and industry sources and provides you with pre-formatted reports in an instant, and company, industry and executive profiles. LexisNexis News & Business - This LexisNexis database provides access to full-text online legal, news and business information services with 2 billion documents gathered from 28,000 sources. Coverage includes: Irish and International newspapers ; Irish and International Companies 18,600 News and Business sources from around the world. MarketLine Advantage - This latest version of MarketLine replaces Datamonitor360 and gives access to a unique mix of company, industry, country and financial data for every major marketplace in the world. Masters of Architecture - Masters of Architecture is a database of approx. 7000 digitised slides in jpg format which illustrates some of the works of famous architects. Myilibrary - Myilibrary is an online platform for hosting e-books. The current selection of over 240 titles includes Social Care, Construction, Design, Early Childhood, Facilities Management, Statistics, Business & Accounting, AutoCAD and Electronics. Pidgeon Digital - an online repository of illustrated talks which cover the areas of Architecture, Engineering and Design. Started in 1979 by Monica Pidgeon, the purpose of the series, which consists of over 200 illustrated talks, is to widen the horizons of students of architecture and design by giving them the opportunity to share the thinking of leading members of the profession worldwide. These presentations are sound files with time-coded illustrations. In some cases, there will seem to be quite a bit of audio to get through before the picture changes. Talks can be between 10-30 minutes in duration. It is possible to search the talks and the illustrations and to use the illustrations independently of the audio. USERNAME AND PASSWORD REQUIRED
Pharmaceutical Journal Online - This is the online version of The Pharmaceutical Journal, the official journal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. Nevertheless, this is a useful resource for identifying material that may be of interest and from time to time SAGE makes some titles temporarily free to access. Springerlink - Springerlink is one of the world's leading interactive databases for high-quality journals, book series, books, reference works and the Online Archives Collection. Even though IT Carlow does not have a full-text subscription to this resource, it is still a powerful central access point for students, researchers and academics. It provides an index to, and abstracts of, most of the published output of Springer Science+Business Media Deutschland GmbH. The Teachers TV content covers every possible subject area Bullying, Behaviour Management, ADHD in the classroom, Early Language, Secondary Maths, Art Workshop, Guided Reading, Primary Science, Dealing with Family Breakdown and more. UK/EIRE Reference Centre - UK/EIRE Reference Centre combines British & Irish sources (magazines, newspapers, and reference books) with international sources to create a substantial collection of full-text research publications. Web of Science - Provides multidisciplinary literature coverage including cited references in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Search backward and forward in time with cited reference searching, analyze results, search over 100 years of back files. In addition, the CrossSearch facility allows the extension of a search to multiple freely-available databases. Westlaw - Westlaw IE is the most comprehensive and authoritative Irish online legal research service. It provides online access to an extensive collection of legal content including : a collection of case law including renowned reporting series such as ILRM and ILTR giving full text law reports dating back to 1867, consolidated legislation, annotated legislation, a unique collection of journals, relevant news and business information, and a current awareness service updated once a day. Wiley Online Library - Wiley Online Library hosts a broad multidisciplinary collection of online resources covering life, health and physical sciences, social science, and the humanities.
