IT Carlow Access Programme

The IT Carlow Access Programme targets those who have the ability to benefit from and succeed in third level education but who, for a variety of reasons, are under-represented in higher education.

The Carlow Access Programme is a supplementary admissions scheme which offers college places on reduced points to:

  1. Applicants from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds (Reduced Points Entry plus Financial Support) Or
  2. Applicants with disabilities (Reduced Points Entry plus Disability Support)

Normally, applicants to either scheme will have been in attendance at a school for the entire duration of their second-level education, or at a recognised Adult Education Provider in the case of mature applicants.  Students should be able to demonstrate that they are highly motivated and interested in studying at undergraduate level in their chosen area.

Scheme 1: CAP – Disability Entry

The following types of disabilities are considered:

  • Dyslexia/Dyspraxia
  • Physical Disability
  • Blind & Visually Impairment
  • Deaf & Hard of Hearing
  • Mental Health
  • Asperger's Syndrome/ ASD
  • ADHD or ADD
  • Significant ongoing illness/other

What entry requirements are required?

Leaving Certificate students are required to have the minimum entry requirements for the course they have applied for. QQI-FE (FETAC) students need a full QQI-FE (FETAC) award. Mature students are assessed solely on the basis of their application.

Scheme 2: CAP – Financial Support

The following kinds of socio-economic reasons are considered:

  • Long-term unemployment
  • Low family income
  • Little or no family tradition of progression onto Higher Education
  • Under represented socio-economic groups in Higher Education

What entry requirements are required?

Leaving Certificate students are required to have the minimum entry requirements for the course they have applied for. FETAC students need a full FETAC award. Mature students are assessed solely on the basis of their application.

Note: Applicants may apply for both schemes but will only be accepted on one. If an applicant is successful on one scheme they may receive some supports from the second scheme e.g. if an applicant has a disability and is accepted onto the CAP-Financial Support scheme they will receive the same disability support that is available to all students in the institute.
